Cylinder Head Overhaul

The cylinder head is an important component in your car engine's operation and performance. Your head gasket seals the cylinder head; there is an opening in your cylinder that allows coolant to transfer through the head and the engine block. Coolant cools the engine by flowing around the cylinder head and engine block along galleries. Separate galleries carry oil. The cylinder head gasket ensures that there is a tight seal to keep the high pressure of the combustion chamber at the top of the cylinder separate from the coolant and the oil. If you are having problems with your car cylinder and/or head gasket, the detection and repair of these issues will keep your car cool and running properly. Since the car cylinder and the head gasket are different parts, the cost to repair each is different.

The engine block holds the main components of the engine including the pistons and crankshaft. The engine block is also responsible for containing the huge torque generated in changing the reciprocating motion of the pistons into the rotary motion of the crankshaft which makes the flywheel turn and then the gearbox. In any engine that stress can manifest it self as cracks in the engine block casing. Whether the engine block is made of cast iron, steel or aluminium at T G Norris we have the specialist equipment required to repair these blocks. We specialise in classic one off engine block repairs.

Engine Cylinder Liners

A cylinder wall in an engine is under high temperature and high pressure, with the piston and piston rings sliding at high speeds. In particular, since longer service life is required of engines for trucks and buses, cast iron cylinders that have excellent wear-resistant properties are only used for cylinder parts.

Also, with the recent trend of lighter engines, materials for engine blocks have been shifting from cast iron to aluminum alloys. However, as the sliding surface for the inner cylinder, the direct sliding motion of aluminum alloys has drawbacks in deformation during operation and wear-resistance. For that reason, cast iron cylinder liners are used in most cases.

Crack Detection

Depending on their locations, crack severity will vary. They tend to form, spread and get worse as heat, thermal stress, heavy loads, repeated bending and flexing, metal fatigue, pounding and vibration take their toll on a part. Cracking is an indication that an area is experiencing more stress than it can handle.

Finding those cracks will enable us at T.G.Norris Diesel Engineer to determine whether you should repair or replace those parts. You simply can’t afford to spend a lot of time machining or reconditioning cores or used parts that may be destined for failure.

With hard-to-find and high value engine blocks and cylinder heads, the decision may hinge on the extent of the damage. If the part can be repaired effectivly. We pride ourselves with our high degree of success. It is not very often that we find the part cannot be rebuilt.

At T.G.Norris Diesel Engineer we ever assume a part or a casting is okay just because you can’t see any visible cracks. We always assume there may be cracks – although, because engine parts are made of so many different materials these days, finding them may be a challenge. To help us we use both magnetic and ultra-sound along with temprature adjusted pressure testing to make sure nothing is left to chance.
